Christmas in LondonChristmas Day lands on a weekend this year so the public holidays have been shifted slightly from the norm. Boxing Day takes place on the Monday, 26 December and the actual bank holiday for Christmas Day has been shifted to Tuesday, 23 December ensuring that the public holidays are still in the week.

New Year in LondonWith Christmas taking care of, most people will be looking to start off 2017. And as usual, New Year’s Eve is 31 December and New Year’s Day on 1 January.  But similar to Christmas Day, New Year’s Day also falls on a weekend on Sunday, 1 January. So this means that Monday, 2 January is a public holiday.

 

Into the New Year and it will be quite a long period before the next bank holiday, which is Easter.

The bank holidays following New Year is the Easter weekend. This consists of Good Friday on 14 April and Easter Monday on 17 April in 2017. This is somewhat later than the Easter holiday in 2016 which fell in March.

The dates of the Easter bank holiday are actually determined from the solar and lunar calendars. Generally, Easter weekend falls on the Sunday after the first full moon following 21 March. So the earliest that Easter bank holiday can take place is 22 March. This actually happened in the 17th and 18th centuries. Also, the latest that the Easter break can take place is on 25 April and is common date for Easter is 19 April.
